Gail Devers

Multiple Gold Medalist US Sprinting Legend

One of the most successful female athletes of all time and a member of both the National Track and Field Hall of Fame and the US Olympic Hall of Fame, Gail Devers’ resume is impossible to fit on one page. A three-time world indoor champion in the 60m, a 60m hurdles world champion, a 100m world champion, a three-time 100m hurdles world champion and a back-to-back 100m Olympic champion, she is also only the second woman in history to defend an Olympic 100m title and the first ever to hold both world and Olympic titles in the 100m at the same time. Across the Olympics, World Championships, World Indoors and Pan American Games, Gail ultimately went on to win 14 gold and 4 silver medals. Her multi-discipline professional record is inspirational on its own, but set in the context of her personal story Gail’s achievements are even more astounding. Diagnosed with Graves’ disease in 1990, the resulting treatment caused her to suffer debilitating symptoms in her feet that left her unable to walk. Not only did Gail recover physically and mentally to return to international competition, but she was still competing aged 40 in 2007, where she beat the 2004 Olympic champion in competition over the 60m hurdles to set the best time in the world of that season, beating the World Record for a 40-year old by over 6 tenths of a second in the same stroke. Now coaching and a passionate advocate for those living with her condition, Team OPEX are honoured to welcome Gail to this year’s conference to share her story. In a wide-ranging on-stage interview covering themes such as building a resilient mindset, coping with adversity and recovering from setbacks, Gail’s personal journey has plenty to teach our Transformation community about what it takes to deliver the highest level of performance – and to sustain that performance over time.
