Explainable AI enhances interpretability of process mining

Researchers from the University of Santiago de Compostela, Spain, carried out a literature review investigating the practical application of explainable artificial intelligence (XAI) methods in process mining.

The increasing complexity of process mining algorithms and their growing reliance on black-box AI models presents the significant engineering challenge of making automated process analysis results interpretable and trustworthy for business stakeholders. XAI – a field of research within AI that explores methods which provide humans with the ability of intellectual oversight over AI algorithms – has emerged as a solution to enhance the interpretability of process mining techniques.

The systematic literature review investigated the application of XAI methods in process mining through analysis of 69 peer-reviewed studies from 2016 to January 2025. It catalogued and analyzed how different XAI approaches – from intrinsically interpretable models to advanced post-hoc explanation methods – are being adapted and implemented for process mining tasks.

“In process mining contexts, we found XAI techniques being engineered for predictive monitoring (33 studies), process discovery (15 studies), conformance checking (12 studies) and process enhancement (nine studies),” the researchers wrote. The practical evaluation approaches spanned quantitative metrics, user studies, industrial case demonstrations and benchmark datasets.

However, key engineering challenges persist, including scalability limitations, lack of standardized evaluation protocols and limited validation in industrial settings, the academics added. “We provide a structured research agenda prioritizing the development of scalable, industry-ready XAI methods specifically tailored to process mining applications.”

Celonis publishes first issue of On Process newsletter

Process mining and process intelligence leader Celonis published the first issue of On Process, its new monthly newsletter on the world of process excellence. It featured an inside look at the processes that make fast-food giant McDonalds and drinks brand Campari work along with showcasing a new Celonis Academy Course: Process Copilots.

What’s more, Celonis founder and CEO, Alexander Rinke joined The Prof G Pod to talk about how Celonis started, where it’s headed and why process excellence isn’t just business but a way of life.

Meanwhile, the State of Oklahoma has unlocked more than US$10 million in value by leveraging process intelligence. Oklahoma unveiled the impressive results from the first year of leveraging the Celonis Process Intelligence platform to enhance visibility into its processes as it positions itself as a national leader in efficient, transparent and accountable governance.
