TRANSPARENT project revolutionizes acute and emergency care pathways
A new project seeks to use process mining to revolutionize acute and emergency care pathways. Dubbed TRANSPARENT, the two-year innovation fund project from RWTH Aachen University Hospital officially opened in January, with all involved partners coming together for the consortium meeting late last month. Wil van der Aalst – globally renowned as the “Godfather of Process Mining” – is one of those involved in the project.
“The aim of the project is the first trans sectoral, multimodal analysis of patient pathways in acute and emergency situations in order to develop navigation aids and strengthen needs-based access,” stated the Institute for Medical Informatics, which is co-leading the project alongside the Center for Clinical Acute and Emergency Medicine.
Given that it is often not clear to those involved in acute and emergency care which resources the patients have already accessed, the project aims to make the pathways visible for the first time. “This should help to optimize resource utilization and make care more patient-centered. To this end, data on emergency treatment from various sectors will be linked: statutory health insurance, emergency services and emergency room care.”

Celonis expands operations in the Middle East and Africa
Process mining vendor Celonis appointed Dave Hitt as regional VP for Middle East and Africa (MEA). Hitt will lead Celonis’ efforts to expand operations in the region and drive adoption of process intelligence across MEA’s key industries including energy, mining, financial services and the public sector. MEA represents a strategic growth market for Celonis, with immense potential across both the public and private sectors, the firm stated in a press release.
“Both Saudi Arabia and the UAE are making substantial investments to modernize their public sectors, from healthcare and education to utilities and infrastructure,” said Hitt. Celonis is uniquely positioned to help accelerate these transformations by providing real-time insights that enhance efficiency, speed up service delivery and optimize large-scale projects, he added. “For me, this role is about making the MEA region a success story. We’ve seen firsthand in South Africa how process intelligence can transform operations and the Middle East also presents a great opportunity. The region is progressive and eager to drive digital transformation at an unprecedented scale.”

Researchers enhance process intelligence with quantity-related process mining
Researchers proposed a framework for extending process intelligence with quantity-related process mining. The framework integrates the concept of a quantity state based on properties derived from common logistics processes. “We introduce extensions to object-centric event logs and object-centric Petri nets that include such counts of items,” they wrote in a research paper. “We show the feasibility of detecting the quantity state from the proposed event log class and demonstrate its capability to convey quantity dependencies using a Python-based implementation.”
