Global law firm Freshfields is embarking on an artificial intelligence (AI) led digital transformation strategy with Google Cloud. It is partnering with Google Cloud to roll out its Gemini LLM capabilities across the business and use Google’s Vertex AI platform to create bespoke AI agents for its legal and business processes.

Gemini with Google Workspace will give Freshfields employees access to AI that is embedded in tools like Docs, Sheets and NotebookLM, enabling the firm to provide a broad range of technology solutions that support the needs of Freshfields’ clients, according to the announcement.

Freshfields also plans to use Agentspace, deploying agents that bring together Gemini's advanced reasoning, Google-quality search and enterprise data.

Streamlining repetitive legal processes

Repetitive legal processes can often be a drain on productivity for legal employees – and their clients. To address this, Freshfields is integrating new AI-powered tools into legal workflows and products to boost collaboration and productivity, the company said.

For example, Gemini will power Dynamic Due Diligence, Freshfields’ proprietary tool that is designed to enhance legal reviews and due diligence, significantly improving the scale, accuracy and efficiency of these processes.

“We have a mindset of client-centric innovation, delivered in a responsible way,” said Alan Mason, Freshfields global managing partner. “This partnership with Google Cloud supports our innovation strategy by allowing us to tap into Google’s generative AI expertise for the benefit of our clients.”

Freshfields is focused on using the right tool for the right client, Mason added. “This partnership with Google Cloud will enhance our ability to collaborate more closely with clients to find the best solutions for their business and ours.”

Generative AI’s transformative potential

Generative AI has the potential to transform the way people and teams navigate work, helping streamline everything from daily tasks to complex problem solving – especially in highly regulated industries, according to Thomas Kurian, CEO of Google Cloud. “We've been a proud partner of Freshfields' innovation journey for years with Google Workspace. We believe that our AI technologies can help Freshfields deliver new innovations for its organization, clients and the legal industry overall.”

Global spending on generative AI is projected to reach US$644 billion in 2025, marking a 76.4 percent increase from 2024, according to a recent forecast by Gartner. This surge is largely attributed to the integration of AI capabilities into hardware devices such as servers, smartphones and PCs, with hardware investments expected to comprise 80 percent of generative AI investment.

However, despite the substantial financial commitment, Gartner’s analysis indicates a paradoxical trend. While foundational model providers are investing heavily to enhance the performance and reliability of generative AI models, there is a noticeable decline in expectations because of high failure rates in initial proof-of-concept (POC) projects and dissatisfaction with current generative AI outcomes.

A research study by Boston Consulting Group’s revealed that only 26 percent of companies have developed the necessary capabilities to move beyond AI POCs and generate tangible value.
