Appian publishes Q2 financial results

Process automation vendor Appian published its second quarter 2024 financial results, reflecting a 19 percent year-over-year increase in cloud subscription revenue (US $88.4 million).

  • Total subscriptions revenue, which includes sales of cloud subscriptions, on-premises term license subscriptions and maintenance and support, increased 20 percent year-over-year to $113.0 million, Appian stated.
  • Professional services revenue decreased by 1 percent to $33.5 million compared to the second quarter of 2023. Total revenue was $146.5 million, up 15 percent compared to the second quarter of 2023.
  • Cloud subscription revenue retention rate was 118 percent as of June 30, 2024.
  • Generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) operating loss was $39.2 million, compared to $40.7 million for the second quarter of 2023.
  • Non-GAAP operating loss was $13.1 million, compared to $27.1 million for the second quarter of 2023.

“Due to enhanced functionality launched this quarter, Appian AI usage nearly doubled,” said Matt Calkins, CEO and founder of Appian. “Looking ahead, we are accelerating our path to profitability. We now expect to achieve adjusted EBITDA [earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization] breakeven for the full year 2024.”

Appian also announced that it will appeal a decision by the Court of Appeals of Virginia in a bid to reinstate its judgment of willful and malicious trade secret misappropriation against Pegasystems Inc. (“Pega”). The verdict from the jury was based on seven weeks of testimony from dozens of witnesses and thousands of pages of documents demonstrating that Pegasystems employed a “spy” to analyze the inner workings of Appian’s software, improve its own product and generate billions of dollars in revenue based on its misappropriation.

Celonis launches Platform Apps Program with ecosystem partners

Process mining and process intelligence leader Celonis launched the Celonis Platform Apps Program, enabling companies to access domain-specific applications built in partnership with the firm’s partners. The program kicks off with four purpose-built apps, co-created by Celonis and ProcessLab, Marcadus, Ashling Partners and KMLZ, offering dedicated solutions for banking, oil, gas and chemical, manufacturing and cross-industry use cases.

“The Celonis Platform Apps Program demonstrates the massive potential that results from combining the power of the Celonis Process Intelligence Platform with the deep domain expertise of our partner Ecosystem,” commented Carsten Thoma, president of Celonis. “The Celonis Process Intelligence Graph is like a Wikipedia of process intelligence. It provides an extensible data model, embedded AI offerings, AI-enabling process insights and the ability to understand and fix the delta between the ‘as is’ and ‘to be’ states of the business.”

The first Celonis Platform Apps Program apps are:

  • Celonis Cross Border Payments, powered by ProcessLab.
  • Celonis Plant Maintenance Navigator, powered by Marcadus.
  • Celonis Maintenance Control Center, powered by Ashling Partners.
