Process mining is a tried and tested component of process excellence. However, new technologies and organizational requirements are bleeding significant new life into process management in the modern business landscape.

Analyst firm Gartner defines process mining as strategies designed to discover, monitor and improve processes by extracting knowledge from events captured in information systems to continuously deliver visibility and insights.

“Process mining includes automated process discovery (extracting process models from an event log), conformance checking (monitoring deviations by comparing model and log), social network/organizational mining, automated construction of simulation models, model extension, model repair, case prediction and history-based recommendations,” the firm adds.

In its recent Magic Quadrant™ for Process Mining Platforms report – which analyzes market trends and the performance of 18 vendors – Gartner states that, by 2026, 25 percent of global enterprises will have embraced process mining platforms as a first step to creating a digital twin for business operations (DTO), paving the way to autonomous business operations.

As process mining and its application in businesses evolves, it’s increasingly important for leaders to have solid understanding and knowledge of the concept. Here are eight free training courses designed to help improve process mining knowhow and skills.

1. In the process – Celonis

Delivered by process mining vendor Celonis, this course eases learners into the world of process mining. This includes what process mining is, how it works, why it matters and how to get started. Celonis says the four-module course is designed for anyone that is brand new to process mining and for those looking for an easy-to-watch refresh. “This is where you begin to make your processes work for you,” the vendor states.

2. Introduction to process mining with ProM – Eindhoven University of Technology

This course explores how to use the open-source process mining framework ProM to analyze, visualize and improve processes based on data. It is designed for anyone with an interest in business process management (BPM), data science and/or process analytics. No specific prior knowledge is required. Participants learn how to identify event data suitable for analysis, apply and interpret various process mining techniques in the ProM tool, describe process flow based on event data and improve processes based on process mining analysis.

3. Get started with process mining in Power Automate – Microsoft

Hosted by Microsoft via Microsoft Learn, this course covers process mining’s role in hyperautomation and analyzing business processes by using the Power Automate Process Mining desktop app. In module one, participants learn about creating and analyzing a process report as well as reading data visualization charts, process maps and viewing process key performance indicators (KPIs). Module two outlines installing Power Automate Process Mining and its key features, analyzing business processes to uncover inefficiencies and streamlining processes through automation.

4. A step-by-step introduction to process mining – Hasso Plattner Institute

This course provides a general understanding of the concepts and techniques behind process mining. It is most valuable for domain experts and for professionals in IT and business consulting. Delivered by the Hasso Plattner Institute (HPI), an independent faculty of digital engineering at the University of Potsdam, the course provides a good understanding of fundamental factors such as event log generation and process discovery. It also explores how to use data about process execution to detect undesired behavior and potential compliance issues as well as how process mining can help to understand more detailed aspects of process execution. This includes understanding what decisions have been made in a process and why/what factors determine overall process completion time.

5. Process mining: Data science in action – Eindhoven University of Technology

Explaining the key analysis techniques in process mining, this course teaches participants about various process discovery algorithms that can be used to automatically learn process models from raw event data. It also provides software, real-life data sets and practical skills to directly apply theory in a variety of application domains, as well as outlining process mining as a bridge between data mining and business process modeling. The course is described as introductory level with various practical assignments, giving participants the means to start a process mining project and explain how process mining can be used for operational support.

6. Process mining: From theory to execution – Celonis/RWTH Aachen University

In a collaborative effort between Celonis and RWTH Aachen University, this course connects core process mining concepts and techniques with the Celonis EMS software. The course includes 10 hours of on-demand virtual learning introducing concepts such as data extraction, process discovery, comparative process mining, predictive process mining and execution management. It also takes a deep-dive into the foundations and core concepts of process mining, shares practical use cases and exercises using the Celonis EMS and provides free access to software and event data, as well as free certification.

7. Process mining for robotic process automation – LinkedIn Learning

Available via a free trial, this LinkedIn Learning course outlines how process mining can help evaluate an organization’s processes to see where automation may be beneficial. The syllabus includes an introduction to process mining as well as an outlining of process capture, process exploration, process development and process oversight. The course concludes with key takeaways and methods for forging individual paths in process mining.

8. Process mining in healthcare – Eindhoven University of Technology

Another course provided by the Eindhoven University of Technology, process mining in healthcare explores how process mining can help turn complex healthcare data into valuable insights. Although designed for healthcare experts who want to find out more about using data to solve problems and execute ideas, it will also be of interest to process mining enthusiasts who want to know more about the application of process mining in healthcare. The course covers aspects such as discovering, inspecting and conformance checking event data as well as performance analysis, process improvement and process mining challenges.
