Three OPEX trends in the EMEA region
Uncover the insights of more than 120 surveyed industry professionals and how they shape the OPEX trends in EMEA
Add bookmarkPEX Network’s annual, global state of the industry survey draws insights from a wide range of process excellence industry professionals, to shed light on the major trends developing in the industry.
Ahead of the release of The PEX Report 2023, we focus on the EMEA region, highlighting the key trends that process professionals have identified and discussing the observations presented.
Most transformation is happening at the unit or department level
More than a quarter of those surveyed (27 percent) stated that transformation in their organization is primarily happening at the unit or department level. The following two most common responses were enterprise-wide and top-down transformation, each selected by 23 percent of respondents.
This data suggests that businesses are putting transformation into the hands of those who understand organizational processes the best, the people who operate these processes on a daily basis.
By allowing transformation to take shape at the unit or department level, businesses can ensure they are leveraging the expertise of their employees to tackle issues. Frontline employees are best placed to identify which processes are most in need of transformation and which will have the biggest impact with regard to customer satisfaction.
Most are in the early stages of this transformation, however, with 26 percent stating that they are still building a process base and framework. This likely means that it will be some time before we begin to see the impact of this focus on unit and department level transformation.
Business intelligence is the primary solution being invested in
The primary solution being deployed to support operational excellence (OPEX) initiatives is data analytics or business intelligence, with 37 percent of respondents selecting it as one of their top solutions.
The use of data for business intelligence is key for enhancing visibility in an organization. By collecting and aggregating data from across the business, organizations are able to identify the most valuable areas for transformation by locating bottlenecks or inefficiencies. They can also track how the transformation is going with real-time KPIs.

As the correct application of data enhances an organization’s ability to successfully implement transformation initiatives, it is unsurprising to see it being widely deployed.
Cyber security is the primary concern when it comes to low- and no-code
According to 26 percent of respondents, when seeking to implement low- and no-code application development the cyber security risks associated with such platforms are the primary challenge.
These are legitimate concerns, as the use of an application development platform developed by an external party forces businesses to sacrifice on visibility over the application code. As low- and no-code platforms abstract the application code to offer pre-developed functionality, visibility concerns and questions are raised about its security.
With 29 percent of respondents already boasting a full and complete low- or no-code platform, and 32 percent planning to invest in one, it may be that businesses are overcoming these concerns or we may see this problem grow worse as adoption increases.
