The way organizations gather process intelligence is undergoing a major shift. Traditional approaches, such as process mining, analyze system logs to map workflows, but they miss a critical piece of the puzzle: the human actions and decisions that drive those processes. Without this visibility, businesses struggle to pinpoint inefficiencies and optimize operations effectively.

New AI-powered platforms for process intelligence are transforming the way organizations approach business process optimization, providing more comprehensive insights into how work can be improved across an organization.

At the forefront of this transformation is Mimica, a leading task mining company dedicated to helping organizations uncover inefficiencies and automate repetitive processes. At OPEX Week 2025, one of the leading global operational excellence OPEX) events, Amelia Brand met with Tuhin Chakraborty, co-founder and CEO of Mimica, who shared his insights on the growing impact of AI in process intelligence. With a strong foundation in machine learning, Mimica is reshaping how businesses collect and analyze workflow data, enabling more efficient and intelligent decision-making.

In this exclusive interview, Chakraborty discusses the key differences between task mining and process mining, the role of AI in process transformation and the challenges businesses face when integrating automation solutions. He also provides valuable advice for process excellence leaders looking to leverage AI for operational efficiency.

PEX Network: What brings Mimica to OPEX Week and what are your goals for the event?

Tuhin Chakraborty: OPEX Week is a great event for us to meet prospects. Many of the companies we engage with are focused on driving transformation and improving operational efficiency. We attend this event every year because it provides an excellent opportunity to connect with people who are passionate about business processes.

PEX Network: How do you define process mining and how does it differ from task mining?

TC: Mimica is a task mining company. Process mining is an older technology that emerged about 10 years ago. Essentially, it collects system-level data to provide a high-level overview of a process. However, process mining does not capture activities occurring outside of enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems. Business processes are often complex and span multiple tools, such as Excel, Outlook and Teams, not just the ERP system.

Task mining, on the other hand, offers an employee-level or desktop-level view of how processes unfold. It records all the actions that employees perform across different systems, providing deeper insights into workflow inefficiencies and automation opportunities.

A common misconception is that task mining is limited to individual tasks, whereas process mining maps entire workflows. However, task mining can also map end-to-end processes. It reveals what employees are doing, identifies inefficiencies and highlights areas for automation.

PEX Network: How do you see process intelligence evolving in the next few years and how is Mimica shaping that future?

TC: The biggest transformation we’ve seen is the rise of AI. AI can analyze the data we capture, derive meaningful insights and make sense of it in ways humans typically cannot. Looking ahead, process intelligence will not only involve data collection and process analysis but also AI-driven recommendations for process improvements.

AI has always been at the core of what we do at Mimica. Machine learning and AI have been integral to our company since its inception. We leverage AI to help our customers uncover actionable insights from their data, shaping the future of process intelligence.

PEX Network: What advice would you give to process excellence leaders looking to integrate AI into their transformation strategy?

TC: Two key points stand out. First, organizations already possess a vast amount of untapped data. Employees generate significant data while working on their computers, yet much of this information is not collected. Businesses should start capturing this data to gain insights into process and automation opportunities.

Second, AI should be leveraged to process this data. AI can extract valuable insights and reveal inefficiencies that might otherwise go unnoticed. At Mimica, we specialize in collecting and analyzing this data through AI, enabling organizations to optimize their processes effectively.

PEX Network: What are the biggest challenges organizations face when integrating AI-driven automation solutions?

TC: Data security is an important consideration. Many organizations are cautious about how their data is handled, whether it will be used by external companies and if it remains secure. At Mimica, we prioritize data anonymization. Our platform ensures that no confidential or personally identifiable information (PII) is captured. Names, addresses, phone numbers, credit card details and social security numbers are completely stripped from our reports. Ensuring data security is a critical consideration for any organization adopting AI.

PEX Network: Can you provide more context on the opportunities for generative AI in process excellence?

TC: Generative AI is set to dramatically increase the volume of work that can be automated. Tasks such as communication, unstructured data processing and intelligent decision-making can now be automated where they previously could not.

However, many organizations struggle to identify the best use cases for generative AI. While there is significant enthusiasm about its potential, there is also a bottleneck in pinpointing the right applications. This is where tools like Mimica come in. We record team activities and identify automation opportunities, helping businesses determine where generative AI can be most impactful.

PEX Network: How does Mimica address concerns about investing in AI?

TC: It’s not enough to simply say a process can be automated. Organizations need a clear roadmap for implementation. Automation must be viewed in the broader context of an entire workflow.

Mimica provides customers with a comprehensive process overview, pinpointing which aspects can be automated and modeling both the current and future state. This transparency ensures confidence in the automation journey and its expected outcomes.

PEX Network: What do you predict will be the biggest trend in process excellence this year?

TC: Efficiency is a major focus. Companies are increasingly aiming to achieve more with fewer resources. Every week, we hear about major corporations implementing layoffs and job cuts, making efficiency a top priority.

Another trend is the adoption of advanced AI technologies. Tools like ChatGPT have captivated people worldwide and business leaders are eager to integrate AI to enhance efficiency. Mimica sits at the intersection of these trends, helping organizations harness AI to optimize processes and drive automation.

PEX Network: Why is attending events like OPEX Week so important? What are the most valuable aspects of being here?

TC: There’s nothing more valuable than face-to-face interactions. In-person conversations foster openness and provide deeper insights into business challenges. Additionally, direct engagement allows us to gauge real-time reactions to our product, which is far more authentic than virtual interactions.

Getting in front of a concentrated audience that genuinely cares about process improvement is invaluable. That’s why events like OPEX Week are a critical part of our strategy.

PEX Network: How would you describe OPEX Week to someone who has never attended?

TC: It’s a rush! The event is fast paced, with countless people eager to learn about your product. You need a strong team to manage the interactions effectively. It’s also incredibly inspiring. Being surrounded by professionals who care about process excellence and hearing their success stories is energizing.
