Why focusing on digital adoption is critical
As investment in digital transformation solutions shows no signs of slowing down, focusing on user adoption of digital technologies is key
Add bookmarkSince February 2020, many organizations have implemented digital tools to overcome the disruption brought on by the Covid-19 pandemic and help with business continuity in a disparate teams context.
In both PEX Report 2021 and PEX Report 2022, digital transformation was one of the top solutions companies planning to invest in – number one in the former, third in the latter behind data analytics/business intelligence and workflow automation.
Digital adoption is defined by the Digital Adoption website as achieved when “the company’s digital tools become digital assets by being used to their fullest capabilities”.
Ensuring a successful transformation program and digital adoption is, however, challenging, with McKinsey publishing in 2019 the now well-known fact that 70 per cent of transformations fail. This was before organizations rushed to implement new technologies during the pandemic to try and manage business disruption.
One of the key factors contributing to failure is poor change management, which challenges the adoption of the transformation and the technologies being implemented as part of it. PEX Network’s recent Mastering change in hybrid-working models report revealed employees may have limited capacity for change in the current change-saturated context. Long, detailed emails are now overdue and experts recommended change leaders to break change into smaller, more incremental doses.
Digital adoption platforms (DAPs) can be a key asset in ensuring digital adoption success. They are defined by digital adoption pioneer WalkMe as a software platform designed to ensure seamless software learning and adoption by “simplifying the user experience on any platform, app or website” and close the digital skills gap. DAPs are implemented on top of any application, which allows “companies to gain insights into user behavior and create in-application experiences to guide users through business processes”.
The adoption of digital transformation technologies is not going to slow down, with global digital transformation spending estimated to reach US$ 2.8 tn by 2025. Digital adoption will only increase in importance.
